Fire facts > Types of extinguishers
There are two major philosophies related to the manufacture of extinguishers regarding putting the apparatus under pressure : the permanent pressure system and the auxiliary pressure system.
Types of extinguisher
Extinguisher with stored pressure (pressure based upon Nitrogen gaz)
The extinguisher is commercialized under pressure (between 10 to 15 bar).
This type of extinguisher consists out of a manometer and/or an external pressure measurement tool to verify the existence of internal pressure.
The auxiliary pressure extinguisher (with CO2 carbon dioxyde gaz cartridge)
The extinguisher is not under pressure at the moment of commercialization
This type of extinguisher is put under pressure at the moment of activation by its operator.
Therefor, an external indicator of pressure and a measurement tool is not necessary.
Types of extinguisher agents
- Water : used for fires class A
- Water + additive : used for fires class A and B
- Powder : used for fires class A, B and C
- C0² : used for fires class B and C
